Garoua, 18 October 2022. A new first-category hospital has opened its doors in the capital of Cameroon's North Region. On behalf of the President of the Republic, Prime Minister and Head of Government Joseph Dion Ngute inaugurated the Garoua General Hospital (GGH) on Tuesday, 18 October 2022.
The hospital is designed to provide specialist care to the populations of the three northern regions (North, Far North and Adamawa) and of neighbouring countries. Built at a cost of 42 billion CFA francs with the support of the Republic of Korea, it is expected to end most medical referrals from the north to Yaoundé and Douala.

The ceremony
At 12:30 p.m. the Prime Minister cut the ribbon, accompanied by the Korean Ambassador to Cameroon, Jong Han Kim, and unveiled the hospital's commemorative plaque. The guided tour that followed showed modern equipment for general medicine and for specialties including paediatrics, cardiology and dentistry.
The hospital's interim director and the Mayor of Garoua described a facility equipped to deliver high-quality care to the North, Far North and Adamawa.
What officials said
Ambassador Jong Han Kim praised relations between the two countries and described the hospital as Korea's contribution to extending first-category healthcare to Cameroon's northern regions.
Prime Minister Dion Ngute called the hospital the culmination of the government's efforts to make quality healthcare available to all Cameroonians. He said the government was studying a universal health coverage scheme, and he urged careful management of the new facility so that it works at full capacity.
